Classic County Fair Apple Pie

Congratulations to Anne Warkentine for winning 1st Place in the Douglas County Fair Apple Pie Contest! We want to celebrate her well-deserved ribbon and the arrival of apple pie season with a classic recipe to enjoy.

 

Ingredients

  • 2 pie crusts (homemade or refrigerated)
  • 6–7 apples, peeled and thinly sliced
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup flour
  • 1½ teaspoons cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons butter

Directions

  1. Heat oven to 425°F. Place one crust in a pie pan.
  2. Toss apples with lemon juice, sugars, flour, spices, and salt.
  3. Fill crust with apple mixture and dot with butter.
  4. Add top crust, seal edges, and cut vents. Brush with egg wash and sprinkle with sugar, if desired.
  5. Bake 20 minutes at 425°F, then reduce heat to 375°F and bake 35–45 minutes until golden and bubbly.
  6. Cool before slicing.
