April in Lawrence: Favorite Local Spots to Walk, Hike, and Enjoy the Outdoors
Spring has arrived, and there’s no better way to celebrate than by getting outside and enjoying all the beautiful trails, parks, and patios Lawrence has to offer. If you’re looking for a peaceful hike, a scenic stroll, or a cozy patio to relax on, there’s something for everyone. Our Stephens Real Estate agents shared their favorite close-to-home spots to soak up the fresh air and take in the beauty of our town.
For those who love feeling immersed in nature, Zach Dodson recommends the De Victor Park trail. “It’s a favorite for running and walking, with sections that make you feel like you’re deep in the woods, far from the city.” He and his family also enjoy the Lawrence Nature Park, and the KU Field Station trails up on Wild Horse Rd. “We’re lucky to live in Lawrence, with so many fantastic trails and places to explore!” he says.
If lake views and a little adventure sound appealing, Chad Frickey suggests heading to the Northshore Trail at Clinton Lake. He and his family love hiking to Sanders Mound, where they can take in the breeze and listen to the waves crash along the shore. “Combined with the view, it’s a nice local spot to go find some vacation-like Zen,” he says. Erin Nix is also a fan of the Clinton Lake trails—though her reason is a little more unique. “I take my cat, and she loves the little bridges over the creek,” she says.
For those who prefer to stay closer to home, Ahnya Lewis enjoys her own backyard. Without fences separating neighbors, the area has become a dog-friendly paradise. Her senior poodle, who can no longer venture far, benefits from the friendly dogs that come to visit and the beautiful east-facing sunrises. When she does go for a walk, she follows Burroughs Trail through to the Arts District where, conveniently, two of Lawrence’s breweries mark the trail’s end.
Lawrence’s parks and historic neighborhoods also offer great places to walk and explore. Tom Harper enjoys visiting Burcham Park, the levee, Sandra Shaw Park, and the East Lawrence River Refuge Park (aka Riverfront Park). He also loves strolling through Lawrence’s neighborhoods, always finding something interesting along the way.
For those who like a little variety in their walks, Anne Warkentine takes what she calls “destination walks,” often covering 4-7 miles while listening to audiobooks. Living on the west side of town, she enjoys walking to Eagle Bend Golf Course, where she meets her husband for a ride home, or making her way to local spots like Planet Fitness, Ladybird Diner, or Taylor’s Donuts.
From wooded escapes to scenic lake views and charming neighborhood strolls, Lawrence has so many ways to enjoy the outdoors. Where’s your go-to spot? Let us know, and maybe we’ll see you out on the trails!
